Thank you once
again for visiting Rudyville. My name is Rudy Gutierrez and I
appreciate and welcome you to my site.
I was born and
raised in Pueblo, Colorado. As I was growing up in
Pueblo, I was active in music from day one. Being born into
music and the son of the Late, Great Rudy Gutierrez Sr. my
whole musical experience was always gratifying and fulfilling.
He was the leader of the Rudy Gutierrez Orchestra which was quite a
popular group. Bringing what was known back then as the "Tex
Mex" sound brought much joy to Southern Colorado and
surrounding areas.
I remember
visiting with Chuck Alberico (former owner of The Anchor Inn)
several years ago, reminiscing about the good old days, he was
proud to remind me of how he would receive phone calls as far
north as Cheyenne Wyoming from numerous couples wanting to reserve a
table so they may enjoy the various musical styles of the Rudy
Gutierrez Orchestra. Styles such as Rancheras, Polkas,
Boleros, Cha Chas, and Funky Broadway!
I would
enjoy being my fathers little shadow, tag-in along to all his
rehearsals and visualizing that one day, I too would be heavily
involved in music. When groups like "Blood, Sweat, and
Tears...Chicago...Tower of Power," and numerous talented bands of
the time surfaced and were strong in the scene brought to me
strong stylistic influences. My father would cover these groups
with such precision...and very polished. I must say and I say
it proudly that my father was the biggest influence in my life and
he is sadly missed not only by his immediate family, but by numerous
friends who considered him their father as well.
My fathers album
collection had a huge, wide variety of styles ranging from Glenn
Miller, Charlie Parker, Count Bassie, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich,
Frank Sinatra and quite frankly, too many to name.
In fact, the
first song I learned on my Soprano Saxophone was "Strangers
In The Night" performed by ole' blue eyes himself;
Mr. Frank Sinatra. That was my favorite song and I must have been around three
or four at the time, squeaking the melody as best I could on that
little Soprano Saxophone. "Chopsticks" was the first song I
learned on the piano by the way. Taught to me by my very
patient father.
When we lost Mr.
Rudy Gutierrez Sr. on September 1st, 1975 took away a huge part of
us all. And many saddened hearts continued to grow the
best a saddened heart could...unfortunately without the
love and guidance of Mr. Gutierrez.
Please check out this link for more info
on Southern Colorado Artists. There is a pleasant blog about
Mr. Rudy Gutierrez. Thank you Lisa.
I took up the
trombone in elementary school (fifth grade) and continued with
it all the way through college. Which is the University of
Northern Colorado-Greeley, Colorado from 1980-1984.
I studied with
Mr. Buddy Baker who performed with the Stan Kenton Orchestra
prior to teaching at U.N.C. and Mr. Jack Robinson. I learned
how to arrange for the big band from Mr. Daryl Goes who also
performed with the Stan Kenton Orchestra and I learned
music theory from Mrs. Kathy Bundock Moore who made learning so much
fun.
I always
looked foward to attending the U.N.C. Jazz Lab Band I
rehearsals under the direction of Dr. Gene Aitken who was a very
outstanding big band leader and business man. His charisma
took U.N.C. Jazz to a professional level that was well
respected. There were so many outstanding faculty members at
U.N.C. and I thank them for sharing so much musical knowledge with
all of us eager musicians. We were like this huge musical
sponge absorbing as much as we could from the staff there at
U.N.C. We are truly grateful!
I was always
active with the piano practically from birth. I enjoy the keys
because of the enormous possibilities and the physical properties of
the instrument.
The musical
honors I hold proudly growing up include; Southside Area
Band-1974, Stage Band * Trombone Trio-1975, Band-1976, The Variety
Shows of 1976 & 1977, Band President-1977, Outstanding Freshman,
Sophomore-Band-1978 and 1979, Western State College Honor
Band and The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in 1980.
When I moved to
Denton Texas in 1984 I explored the sales
profession. Starting out as a Television, Stereo, and
Furniture sales rep then recruited into the insurance
field. Later to explore automobile sales. I
continued as an automotive sales rep from 1985 through 1992 and
received numerous Salesman of the month honors as well as
Salesman of the year-1989. I must say the award that showed
the most promise was the "Top Gun" award January 1990.
"Awarded for excellence achieved in salesmanship and customer
satisfaction." This honor ranked first place not only in the
department I was currently in at the time but the entire
dealership. Giving full credit to our outstanding sales
manager, Mr. Bob Delmark, gave me visualization of what potential a
person carries within himself shown to him by an outstanding
teacher. Mr. Delmark was definately one to show us how to
utilize our fullest potential.
I kept up with
the piano and met so many outstanding, talented musicians along the
way. Many from Colorado and here in Texas. I feel very
fortunate to reside here in Denton because the University of
North Texas which is world renowned, is less than a mile away.
So many talented artists have been signed out of North Texas which
has a very prestigious music program-a top notch University as
well.
Today I enjoy
looking back and appreciate all the beautiful, talented people I met
and learned from. I hold dear to my heart all the compliments
from friends I admire who remind me of all the people I helped out
along the way...friends whom I consider family as well. This to me
is very gratifying and priceless.
In conclusion, I
was taught to never forget where you came from and the people who
helped you out along the way. There were so many it would be
impossible to name them all...and I do apologize for this but...you
know who you are and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Peace.
